Happy New Year to YOU from the Sun Valley Heli Ski crew!

The turn of the New Year is a moment for reflection. One where you can make lists of accomplishments and take a moment to dream up goals big and small for the year to come. For us, we took stock of the previous winter at our annual guide training this December. We refreshed our skills and celebrated big changes. We debriefed our decision-making and made plans for the season ahead. We honored the losses in our community and reminisced on the magic we’ve shared in these mountains. Our group discussions often circled back on how grateful we are for the breadth of collective knowledge among our crew that we get to bring to each day in our wild and ever-changing office. Bringing you into the mountains is a privilege we do not take lightly.

This winter marks a season of change for us at Sun Valley Heli Ski, with guide Alex Kittrell taking over as owner of the company. You can read some words about the transfer from former owner Jay Lavine on our updated website. New year, same us – just with a new captain at the helm.

2024 ended with a bang in central Idaho where an atmospheric river dropped feet of snow across our permit zone. Current weather models predict that the incoming low-pressure system for the coming weeks will favor additional snowfall in the Northwestern US and Northern Rockies. It’s time to get those powder skis waxed and ready and get those bucket list adventures on the books!

Thank you to all the folks who made this year one to celebrate. It’s a joy to share these mountains with you!

Cheers to a happy and healthy year ahead… with a healthy dose of over-the-head face shots for good measure!

Sun Valley Heli Ski

This is the best-kept secret in heli-skiing…

The legendary ski town of Sun Valley, Idaho is rich in ski history. America’s first ski resort was built in 1936 near the historic mining town of Ketchum and it has been an iconic American ski resort ever since. Generations of families and adventures have been coming here to ski for 75 years.

Sun Valley is also the birthplace of helicopter skiing in the US. Our company was the first heli-ski operation in the US, and with one of the largest permits of back-country terrain, Sun Valley has endless skiing and riding options. While Sun Valley is known around the globe for its incredible service and family friendly community, few know about the enormity and quality of the back-country skiing in the Sawtooth, Pioneer, and Smoky Mountains – accessible right behind the resort.
