Early season is the perfect time to refresh your mental toolbox and ensure you have strategies in place to interact with the dynamic beast - winter backcountry recreation. The rush of helicopter takeoff from the top of your run is an experience like no other. Snow crystals twinkle and swirl as the wind from the rotors takes your breath away. The power of the engine is all-consuming for a brief moment before the helicopter lifts and dives off, leaving you at the top of another Best.Run.Ever. It's no wonder we find ourselves drawn to these days time and time again.
The strong winds created by a low-flying helicopter are called rotor wash.In using this amazing way to access the far-flung parts of the range, we as riders become subject to this vertical column of air generated by the rotor blades throughout the day. The most important thing you can do during loading and unloading is to follow the instructions of your guides. Along with their instruction, follow these rotor wash gear tips:
Wear windproof and waterproof outer layers.
Fully close all pockets, vents, and zippers on your clothing and backpack.
Secure your goggles and any loose items firmly in place.
Ensure your airbag deployment handle is safely stowed.
Hunker down where your guide has indicated.
Hold down packs, skis, and boards.
Enjoy the rush!
It's hard to describe the surreal moment when the snow settles and the silence comes - perched upon a mountain looking down on a perfect line.
You'll just have to come and experience it for yourself!
