Discovering Delight on Down Days

Sun Valley is aptly named for the more than 200 sunny days that grace our valley each year. These bluebird days contribute to the world-class experience offered here at Sun Valley Heli Ski. However, you can’t have a bluebird powder day without the powder! When winter storms strike, that typically means a day on the ground and a different kind of adventure for our guests. Here are some of our favorite recommendations for fun ways to spend your down days.

Bad days for flying often mean epic days at the resort. Spend your day skiing or riding Sun Valley Resort. The resort includes Bald Mountain and Dollar Mountain with 3,400 vertical feet of skiing across 2,400 acres of terrain. Between the two mountains there is something for everyone. Dollar is the ideal spot to build your confidence and Baldy is a great spot to enjoy more advanced terrain options. A down day is a great opportunity to enjoy laps inbounds before flying with us after the storm. If you plan to rent gear, folks with a Sun Valley Heli Ski reservation receive 20% off on premium demo rentals through Sturtevant’s.

Some of our other favorite winter sports include fat biking and nordic skiing on the seemingly endless miles of groomed trails throughout the area. With a network of nordic trails right outside the Gun Club’s front door, even we’ll admit that a groomed trail can be fun every now and again! More information about trails can be found at the Blaine County Recreation District website and at the Visit Sun Valley website links to nordic ski or fat bike ride.

If you’re trying to save your legs for your heli day to come, a great option for some quality rest and relaxation is time spent at Zenergy Health Club and Spa. Zenergy offers a variety of massages from hot stone to deep tissue. In addition to a broad range of fitness classes, the spa has a beautiful sauna and hot tub to help warm your bones and melt your worries away.

Between the funky boutique shopping opportunities and the delicious cuisine found in our unique mountain town, you’re sure to enjoy your day. See for yourself!

Sun Valley Heli Ski

This is the best-kept secret in heli-skiing…

The legendary ski town of Sun Valley, Idaho is rich in ski history. America’s first ski resort was built in 1936 near the historic mining town of Ketchum and it has been an iconic American ski resort ever since. Generations of families and adventures have been coming here to ski for 75 years.

Sun Valley is also the birthplace of helicopter skiing in the US. Our company was the first heli-ski operation in the US, and with one of the largest permits of back-country terrain, Sun Valley has endless skiing and riding options. While Sun Valley is known around the globe for its incredible service and family friendly community, few know about the enormity and quality of the back-country skiing in the Sawtooth, Pioneer, and Smoky Mountains – accessible right behind the resort.
